Robert Piasentin

Robert is a Partner in the Vancouver office of McMillan LLP and is the National Chair of both the firm’s Technology Law Group and Ascent, the firm’s Startups and Emerging Companies Initiative.

Robert brings a highly practical and business-minded approach to the practice of law that drives the success of his clients’ leadership, governance and strategic negotiation objectives. He has contributed to the growth of a wide range of businesses globally, including in Canada, the United States and Europe. His strong commercial practice focuses on technology companies and helping them through all stages of their evaluation and all legal issues they may face, with particular experience in technology outsourcing transactions, software development and licensing solutions, strategic IP and technology commercialization arrangements, and privacy and cybersecurity issues.

Robert has also been a keen champion and supporter of startups and scale-ups and has worked hard to help startups and scale-ups maintain a strong growth trajectory no matter the issues they face.  He works with clients in a range of industries including technology, sports, and media, retail, natural resources, communications and entertainment.

Robert spent more than 15 years as in-house lawyer, working as the General Counsel to one of the largest technology consulting firms in Canada and as a lawyer with a large IP licensing company in the UK.  Robert has helped numerous companies, from start-ups to advanced stage companies, as they look to secure financing, grow their businesses, and seek to exit.
