Vijay Gurbaxani is a distinguished scholar with deep expertise in digital transformation, the strategic impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on business, and the economics of AI.

A globally respected academic, public speaker, and advisor, he works closely with senior executives and board members to help them understand how AI and digital technologies are reshaping strategy, operating models, and sources of competitive advantage. Known for his ability to translate complex technical and economic ideas into clear, actionable insight, his presentations and advisory work blend rigorous research with practical application, equipping leaders to make disciplined, high-stakes decisions in an AI-driven world.

With more than forty years at UC Irvine’s Paul Merage School of Business, including roles as the Taco Bell Endowed Professor of Technology Management and Senior Associate Dean, Dr. Gurbaxani has been a pioneer in advancing the role of digital technologies in management education and research. He is also the Founding Director of the Center for Digital Transformation, a highly regarded research center dedicated to evidence-based, practical thought leadership on digital technology and AI. The Center focuses on helping executives, faculty, students, and society prepare for future success.

His contributions have been recognized through his selection as a Distinguished Fellow of the Information Systems Society, a Leading Voice by the Society for Information Management Research Institute, and as a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Advanced Manufacturing and Supply Chains.

Outside of his professional work, he enjoys music and continues his determined—if humbling—efforts to improve his guitar playing.
